Key Points:

  • Gold-Inflation Paradox: Hot CPI at 3.7% -> Fed hike odds surge to 53.7% -> GLD drops 1.5% and GDX drops 4.4% while central banks quietly buy 63 tonnes in September alone.

  • Six-to-One Ratio: Central banks purchased 288.9 tonnes of gold in Q2 2026 while ETFs shed 44.8 tonnes, a 62% year-over-year increase in sovereign buying that dwarfed paper selling by a factor of six.

  • FOMC Threshold October 28: If the Fed hikes 25 basis points as the 53.7% probability implies, gold could retest the $4,148 level before central bank demand absorbs the paper selling.

  • Thursday Snap-Back: Gold futures surged 1.9% to $4,183.90 by Thursday morning, recouping most of Wednesday's CPI-driven loss within 24 hours on steady physical demand.

At 8:30 a.m. last Wednesday, the September CPI number hit the tape. I wrote Friday about that 3.7% print and the gasoline surge behind it. Here is what I did not write about. Within an hour, gold dropped below $4,100. The whole world calls gold the inflation hedge. It fell on the hottest inflation print in months. That should not happen. But it did.

I can't stop thinking about this. If you hold GLD, you watched it fall 1.5% that day. If you hold GDX, you took it worse, down 4.4% in a single session. The inflation you bought gold to protect against finally showed up. And gold went the wrong way.

You saw the gasoline spike. You saw Fed hike odds jump to 53.7%. I don't think most people realize this. Gold does not react to inflation. Gold reacts to what the Fed will do about inflation. The Fed just got a green light to hike. Treasuries started paying more. Gold pays nothing. So gold fell.

Revealed: Musk’s 27-Year Plan to Reinvent Money (It Just Went LIVE)

In 1998, a 27-year-old Elon Musk set out to replace the U.S. dollar.

Then his plans fell apart.

First, his PayPal co-founders staged a coup and fired him.

Then, he spent decades building Tesla… SpaceX… xAI…

amassing more wealth and power than any man in history.

Now he’s come full circle.

And he’s about to “reboot” the U.S. dollar, with the full blessing of the White House, Congress, and the U.S. Treasury.

If he’s successful, this technology will be bigger than Tesla and SpaceX combined.

And for investors, it could be one of the most explosive opportunities of the decade.

But here is what the headlines missed. GLD bled $330 million that week. Gold ETFs shed 44.8 tonnes in Q2. Central banks did the exact opposite. Sovereign purchases in Q2 hit 288.9 tonnes. That is up 62% from a year ago. More than five times the Q1 total. September alone came in at 63 tonnes. That was the biggest month of central bank gold buying since November 2024. Poland bought 98 tonnes so far this year. China added 23 tonnes in September. It was China's 23rd straight month of buying. Its reserves now sit at a record 2,410 tonnes. The people who print the money were buying gold. They bought at the same prices our ETF crowd was dumping it.

Here's what worries me. The World Gold Council surveyed central bank reserve managers. 74% said the dollar's share of global reserves will shrink over the next five years. Three out of four. These are the people who manage the world's reserve currencies. They are trading their own product for metal. China's gold imports hit $158.8 billion in the first eight months of this year. That is over 1,000 tonnes. China now sits just 27 tonnes behind France in official reserves. New buyers like Guatemala, Indonesia, and Malaysia have come to the market this year. Mine output rose just 1% last year. It takes over 15 years from discovery to production. Supply cannot catch up. This is not a trade. This is a shift.

Morgan Stanley: Branded GLP-1 Prescriptions Are Growing About 16x Faster Than The Overall U.S. Rx Market

Harmon DTC Inc. is building a subscription GLP-1 and peptide business, Harmon.Health, on the Harmon brand and its own customer data, and it's open to individual investors through a Reg CF offering. Market figures are estimates, not guarantees. See the offering and its risks.

The miners tell the same story from a different angle. It costs about $1,785 to pull an ounce of gold out of the ground. Gold trades near $4,148. That is over $2,300 of profit per ounce. Producers hold $19.6 billion more cash than debt. Those are the strongest balance sheets in 20 years. Yet the gold miners index trades at 5.7 times expected operating earnings. That is 22% below its 20-year average. The stock market prices miners like gold is about to crash. Central banks price gold like it is about to matter more than it has in decades. One of them is wrong.

That same Wednesday morning, the USAGOLD bullion desk saw steady buying at the lower spot price. Coin and bar premiums held firm. Buyers in China paid more above spot as winter demand picked up. Private buyers were not waiting. They saw the same prices the ETF crowd dumped at. They lined up to buy. Endeavour Mining's CEO said it at the FT summit that same day. He called $4,000 "pretty damn close" to the floor. Nobody knows which side wins this trade. But I know which side has the bigger vault.

By Thursday morning, gold had bounced. Futures surged 1.9% to $4,183.90. That clawed back most of Wednesday's drop in less than a day. Goldman Sachs forecasts central bank buying at 60 tonnes a month. That pace would top 700 tonnes for the full year. State Street's base case puts gold between $4,750 and $5,500 by the end of Q1 next year. The next FOMC decision is ten days away. I get it if Wednesday shook you. A lot of people sold that morning. Look at who was buying at those exact prices.

Here is the number. In Q2 2026, central banks bought 288.9 tonnes of gold. ETF investors sold 44.8 tonnes. That is six to one. For every tonne the paper crowd dumped, sovereigns took six. That ratio is the whole story.

Two groups read the same CPI print last Wednesday. One group thought about the next Fed meeting. The other thought about the next decade. Poland held 14 tonnes of gold in 1996. Today it holds over 630 tonnes. Governor Glapiński is not building that vault for a trade. He is building it for a world that looks different from this one. I think about that vault.

More on this tomorrow.
