I can't stop thinking about this deal. On July 24, Nvidia signed a letter with a Korean company called SK Hynix. It is worth more than $500 billion. That is the biggest chip deal in the history of the industry. It gives Nvidia first pick on the memory chips that run AI servers. Through 2030.
Three companies make almost all the memory in the world. Samsung. SK Hynix. Micron. They own 95 cents of every dollar in this market. And they've started making AI chips instead of the regular kind. One AI memory chip eats three times the space of a normal one. That leaves a lot less memory for everyone else.
Micron already quit the consumer business. Walked away from it. They saw where the money was and they went to it. That is one of three players, gone.
I don't think most people realize how fast prices have jumped. A memory kit that cost $191 last August costs $1,118 today. That is what the folks at Tom's Hardware clocked on August 17. A 485% rise in one year. Say that number out loud. Four hundred and eighty-five percent. Samsung raised the price on one of its most common chips by 60% in a single month. Sixty percent. In a month.
On Saturday, Nvidia told its biggest server customers to expect 15% price hikes on machines shipping in early 2027. Those customers are Google. Microsoft. Oracle. The companies your bank runs on. The money behind all this is bigger than you think. The AI companies have spent something like a trillion dollars building server farms. Every one of them needs memory. There isn't enough. And nobody can build a new memory plant in less than three years. Nobody knows how bad this gets.
I get it. It sounds strange. A phone call in Korea moves the price of a laptop in Ohio. Nobody talks about it on the news. Nobody names the chip. But the money is moving. The shelves are quietly getting thin.
Nvidia reports earnings Wednesday. The whole market is watching that one number. The stock. The forecast. The chip. Nobody's watching the memory. Nobody's connecting it to the laptop my friend wants to wrap up and put under the tree.
